Most testimonials never become ads. They get collected, watched once by whoever requested them, and filed away. The gap isn't a lack of good material — it's that turning a 60-90 second recording into a working ad requires a specific, repeatable process, and most teams improvise it from scratch every time.
Here's the workflow we use inside HelloFeed, broken into the four steps that actually matter.
1. Isolate the claim, not the testimonial
A full testimonial is a story. An ad is a single claim. Before you touch an editing tool, find the 5-15 second span where the customer says something specific and falsifiable — a number, a before/after, a comparison to what they used previously. "I really like HelloFeed" is not that sentence. "We replaced a $2k/week UGC agency and get better content for less" is.
If you're scanning transcripts by hand, read every sentence in isolation, out of context. The one that still lands without the surrounding setup is your clip. This is exactly what HelloFeed's AI scoring does automatically — it reads every submitted testimonial and surfaces the highest-scoring segment so you're not scrubbing 90-second clips by ear.
2. Reframe for the platform, not the format you collected in
Customers record however is easiest for them — usually horizontal, on a laptop webcam or a phone held sideways. Feed and Reels placements on Meta and TikTok are vertical. Letterboxing a horizontal clip into a vertical frame reads as low-effort and gets scrolled past. Reframe to 9:16, keeping the customer's face centered and readable at thumbnail size.
If the claim needs a setup sentence to make sense, it isn't isolated enough yet. Keep cutting.

3. Caption the claim, not the whole clip
Most social video is watched muted. Burn in captions for the sentence that matters — not a full transcript scrolling underneath. Oversized, high-contrast text on the specific number or claim (the "$2k/week" or "34% lift") does more work than word-for-word captioning of filler.

4. License before you spend a dollar on media
This is the step teams skip and regret. Recording a testimonial and running someone's face in paid ads are two different consents. Before the clip goes live in an ad account, you need a signed license — ideally collected as part of the same flow the customer used to submit the testimonial, not as an awkward follow-up email after the fact. We cover exactly how this works in our testimonial licensing guide.
What this looks like end to end
- Customer submits a video via a magic link — no app, no login.
- The claim is extracted and scored automatically.
- You review the suggested clip, trim if needed, and approve the license offer.
- The reframed, captioned export downloads ready for Meta Ads Manager or TikTok Ads.
None of this is complicated in isolation. What makes it hard is doing it consistently, for every testimonial, without a system. That's the entire reason this workflow exists as software rather than a checklist someone forgets to follow.
